This vintage Churchill plate shows one of the most lively scenes in the Herring’s Hunt series: riders in hunting pinks taking a fence at speed, a fallen huntsman in the foreground, and the field stretching away under a pale sky. The design is adapted from the 19th-century aquatints after John Frederick Herring Sr., engraved by John Harris.

It is a classic English sporting plate — as suited to a dresser or wall as to a country table with creamware and transferware.

Dimensions

- Diameter: 25.2 cm

Condition

- Very Good - The front is clean and glossy. The transfer is complete, the colours remain strong, and there are no chips, cracks or hairlines on the face or rim.
- No significant utensil wear is apparent in the well.
- The reverse shows a few small kiln specks and light brown manufacturing spots, and minor scuffing to the foot ring from stacking or display. These do not show through to the front.
- The backstamp is crisp and fully legible.

- Churchill’s pottery roots go back to 1795 in Stoke-on-Trent.
- This pattern was produced in the 1980s as one of six hunt scenes (The Meet, Breaking Cover, The Find, Full Cry, Tally Ho, The Death).
- Herring (1795–1865) was among the foremost Victorian painters of horses and sporting subjects.
