A slender Portuguese faience tray painted in the Coimbra folk manner kept alive by the workshops around Conímbriga. On a creamy white ground a small grey hare sits among flowering sprays, a tawny hound leaps toward a little building, and scattered blossoms fill the field. A scalloped border in rust, teal and ochre frames the scene and wraps over the rim.

Useful for cheese, fruit or bread, or simply as a painted landscape on the table.

Condition

- Very Good - The tray is structurally sound, with no chips, cracks or restoration.
- The painted decoration is bright and intact.
- Light, honest wear includes scattered white specks along the lower grassy band, a small brown mark on the right short rim, and a darker smudge on the lower border near the leaping animal.
- The unglazed foot rim and central bar show expected kiln and shelf wear.

- Each piece from these workshops is individually decorated; no two are identical. M.C. identifies the painter.

3. About the Maker
- From the 1970s onward, ateliers in Condeixa-a-Nova — near the Roman ruins of Conímbriga and historic Coimbra — revived 17th-century Portuguese faience painting for local use and export.
- Independent painters used the same CONIMBRIGA / SEC.XVII wording as the better-known Estrela de Conímbriga factory (founded 1975).
