This hand-painted chamberstick comes from De Porceleyne Fles, the renowned Delft factory established in 1653 and known today as Royal Delft. The underside bears the factory’s traditional handwritten mark — including the De Porceleyne Fles symbol, “Delft”, the decorator’s initial, and the form number 33A.

Crafted in tin-glazed earthenware, this chamberstick blends practical 18th–19th century domestic design with the expressive floral motifs that have defined Delftware for centuries.

Additional Information

1. Design & Features
- Classic chamberstick silhouette, raised candle socket, and easy-to-hold loop handle
- Hand-painted polychrome flowers in cobalt blue, deep green, manganese-purple, and warm ochre
- Subtle scalloping around the base adds movement and elegance
- A blue-painted rim and ochre accents give it a beautifully balanced colour palette
- Fine glaze crazing visible under light — typical of tin-glaze and adding authentic surface character

2. Craftsmanship
Every detail is executed by hand using centuries-old Delft techniques:
- Tin-glazed earthenware body, fired to achieve a soft white ground ideal for hand-painting
- Overglaze enamels applied with visible brushwork — a hallmark of true Delft polychrome decoration
- Painter’s initials mark the work of an individual decorator at De Porceleyne Fles
- Pattern number 33A indicates the form or design variation internally used by the factory
- A delicate, slightly irregular hand-painted border, consistent with artisanal production rather than mass manufacture

De Porceleyne Fles remains the only longstanding Delft factory still operating today, and pieces bearing its mark are widely regarded as the benchmark for genuine Delftware craftsmanship.

3. Uses & Versatility
Though originally made as a portable candle holder, this chamberstick transitions beautifully into modern styling:
- A striking piece for shelf or console displays, especially within blue-and-white or European folk-art groupings
- Works as a decorative accent in cottagecore, Dutch farmhouse, or eclectic interiors
- Can be used with a standard taper candle for atmospheric evening lighting
- A lovely collectible for Delftware enthusiasts seeking polychrome examples beyond the classic blue
- Ideal for styling vignettes, breakfast trays, or bedside table moments
