Condition
- Very Good - The set shows minimal signs of wear and has been beautifully preserved, retaining full structural integrity and functional utility.
1. The Mortar (Bowl):
Structure: Sound and solid with no chips, cracks, hairline fractures, or structural restorations.
Glaze & Finish: The unglazed interior grinding surface is exceptionally clean, showing only a microscopic hint of authentic use and little deep-seated staining or residue from past ingredients.
Rim & Spout: The top rim and the moulded pouring lip are completely smooth and free of the flea bites or nicks commonly found on vintage kitchen ceramics.
Base: The foot rim shows negligible shelf wear. The incised maker's stamp on the underside ("Warranted Acid Proof / Milton Brook / 2 / Made in England") is crisp, perfectly legible, and well-struck.
2. The Pestle:
Porcelain Head: The unglazed grinding head is intact, firmly attached to the handle, and shows no chipping or cracking around the striking surface.
Beechwood Handle: The turned wood handle is secure with no wobble at the joint. The wood retains a smooth, clean texture and a beautiful natural grain pattern, completely free of water splitting, dry rot, or deep scoring.

Additional Information
1. Design & Features
- Vitrified Ceramic Body: Fired at extreme temperatures, the porcelain becomes a dense, glass-like material that is entirely non-porous and "Warranted Acid Proof."
- It will never absorb strong flavours, pungent oils, or colour stains, allowing you to switch from crushing garlic to grinding delicate spices without flavour transfer.
- Ergonomic Beechwood Handle: The pestle is fitted with a contoured, natural beechwood handle that provides a warm, comfortable grip and excellent leverage, reducing hand fatigue during extended use.
- Integrated Pour Spout: The mortar includes a traditional moulded lip, allowing for the smooth, drip-free pouring of liquid dressings, infused oils, and fine powders.
2. Craftsmanship
- Milton Brook pieces represent the height of utilitarian British ceramic engineering.
- Each mortar is cast with thick, heavy walls to provide stability on the countertop.
- The pestle is uniquely constructed in two parts: a heavy, unglazed porcelain head is permanently joined to a turned beechwood handle, balancing weight and comfort perfectly.
- The incised backstamp on the base is a hallmark of authentic, traditional English pottery production.
3. About Milton Brook
- Rooted in the historic pottery hub of Stoke-on-Trent, England, Milton Brook has been the gold standard for kitchen and laboratory porcelain for generations.
- Manufactured by the renowned Wade Ceramics, these sets were initially produced to meet the exacting, sterile standards of chemists and apothecaries who required completely inert, acid-resistant tools.
- Their unmatched durability and simple, functional design eventually transitioned them from the pharmacy counter straight into the heart of the culinary world.
4. Uses & Versatility
While modern food processors can slice and chop, they often crush the delicate cell walls of ingredients rather than bruising them to release their aromatic oils. This size 2 set is ideal for:
- Spice Grinding: Effortlessly pulverising whole peppercorns, cumin seeds, coriander, and cardamom.
- Pastes & Sauces: Emulsifying traditional pestos, garlic-and-herb aiolis, curry pastes, and ginger-garlic blends.
- Bruising Herbs: Releasing the essential oils from fresh rosemary, thyme, mint, or basil for marinades and dressings.
- Apothecary & Home Remedies: Crushing botanicals, salts, or dietary supplements.
5. Care Instructions
- Porcelain Mortar: The solid porcelain bowl is highly durable and completely dishwasher safe. For stubborn residue, it can be scrubbed with warm water and a mild detergent.
- Beechwood Pestle: To preserve the natural wood handle, the pestle should only be hand washed. Do not submerge or soak it in water, and never place it in the dishwasher. Wipe dry immediately after rinsing.
- Conditioning: Periodically applying a food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to the wooden handle will keep the grain hydrated and prevent splitting over time.
