Dimensions

- Diameter: 22.1 cm

Condition

- Good - This piece is a well-preserved example of mid-century nursery ware. It has been assessed for structural integrity and aesthetic clarity, with the following findings:

Structural Integrity: The plate is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or structural repairs. Notably, there is no crazing (the fine spiderweb-like cracking of the glaze), which is often a common issue with earthenware of this vintage.

Surface Character: The glaze maintains a soft, healthy lustre. Under close inspection and angled light, the surface reveals fine utensil marks (light scratches) consistent with honest domestic use over several decades.

Transfer & Illustration: The "Spring Cleaning" scene remains vibrant and clear. There are minor instances of transfer loss—small "flea-bite" areas where the illustration has worn or was not fully seated during the original firing process. These are most notable in the central tableau and do not compromise the overall narrative of the scene.

Backstamp: The reverse features a crisp, legible Royal Doulton backstamp, including the "Regd. Trade Mark" and the three-bunny motif, confirming its production era between 1937 and 1953.

Stewardship Note: This plate carries the "Barbara Vernon" facsimile signature on the front, marking it as a piece from the most desirable period of Bunnykins production. The surface wear is a testament to its history as a functional piece of heritage tableware rather than a modern reproduction.

Additional Information

1. Design & Features
- The "Spring Cleaning" scene is a masterpiece of narrative illustration. At its heart, it captures the bustling energy of a busy household, rendered in a warm, autumnal palette of russets, greens, and soft blues.
- The wide rim is decorated with the iconic parade of running bunnies, creating a sense of continuous movement that frames the central tableau.
- Notably, the scene includes charming domestic details—from the tiny mouse helper to the "SOAP" box—making it a piece that rewards close observation.

2. Craftsmanship
- This plate is crafted from traditional English earthenware, known for its substantial feel and warm, creamy undertone.
- The illustration is applied via underglaze transferware, a process where the design is printed onto the ceramic before the final firing. This technique ensures the scene is protected beneath a clear, protective glaze, though decades of history have given this particular piece its unique surface character and soft patina.

3. About the Artist: Barbara Vernon
- The soul of the Bunnykins line belongs to Barbara Vernon Bailey (Sister Mary Barbara).
- As an Augustinian nun, she drew these playful scenes to entertain her pupils, never intending for them to become a global phenomenon.
- Her father, then the manager of Royal Doulton, recognised the magic in her sketches and brought them to the kiln.
- She was the exclusive creator of the Bunnykins characters for Royal Doulton. While the aesthetic is very similar—anthropomorphic rabbits in Victorian/Edwardian clothing—the Bunnykins family is an entirely separate "universe" from the world of Peter Rabbit.
- Her work is celebrated for its sincerity; she didn't just draw rabbits, she created a world of domestic rituals that feel remarkably relatable nearly a century later.
- While Beatrix Potter is the household name for rabbit stories, Barbara Vernon is the undisputed queen of the Bunnykins table.

4. Uses & Versatility
While originally intended for the nursery, this salad plate transcends its beginnings.
- A Wall Vignette: The Barbara Vernon signature and detailed border make it a perfect candidate for a plate gallery wall, especially in a kitchen or breakfast nook.
- The Layered Table: Use it as a side or dessert plate to break up a more formal white set, adding a layer of storytelling to a weekend brunch.

5. Care Instructions
To preserve the integrity of the vintage transfer and the earthenware body:
- Hand Wash Only: Modern dishwashers use high heat and abrasive detergents that can dull the glaze and accelerate transfer loss. Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.
- Avoid Soaking: Earthenware is porous; prolonged soaking can lead to moisture being trapped beneath the glaze.
- Temperature Stability: Avoid the microwave or sudden temperature shifts (like moving it from a cold larder to a hot oven) to prevent future stress to the material.
