Surface & Glaze: The tin-oxide glazes remain remarkably vibrant and glossy, with the characteristic "wet look" depth typical of authentic Portuguese faiança.
Crazing: There is no significant crazing (fine hairline cracks in the glaze) visible, which is rare for tiles of this age and indicates they have been kept in a stable, climate-controlled environment.
Edges & Corners: The front-facing edges are crisp with only minor, age-appropriate "nibbling" (tiny pin-sized chips) that occurs naturally with handmade ceramic edges. One tile has a small, shallow flake at the very edge, which is barely noticeable when the set is displayed together.
Structural Integrity: All four tiles are solid and "ring" true when tapped (no hollow or dull sounds that would indicate internal structural cracks).
Reverse Side: The backs show remnants of a soft adhesive to keep the foam padding in place. This has been left intact to preserve the original Azupal hallmark and castle stamp. It can be easily removed with a gentle scraper if you intend to re-mount them.
Note on Artistry: As these are hand-painted, there are natural variations in the intensity of the blue pigment and the weight of the brushstrokes, which are part of the artisanal charm and not considered flaws.
Special Characteristics
Special Characteristics
1. Design & Features
- The "Bouquet" Motif: This set celebrates the vaso de flores (flower vase) and cesto de flores (flower basket) traditions. These are classic 18th-century motifs that represent abundance, hospitality, and the natural beauty of the Portuguese countryside.
Dual Aesthetic: A unique "mixed" set featuring two styles:
- The Monochrome Pair: Deep cobalt blue on a tin-glazed white background, inspired by 17th-century Chinese porcelain and Dutch Delftware.
- The Polychrome Pair: Features a palette of ochre yellow, manganese (purple-brown), and copper green—a technique popularised during the Majolica revival.
- Artisanal Dimensions: Each tile measures approximately 14 cm x 14 cm. This slightly smaller-than-modern format is a hallmark of artisanal production, where the clay naturally contracts during the firing process.
2. Craftsmanship
- Makers & Origin: Hand-painted in Portugal by Azupal, a studio known for maintaining the traditional faiança (earthenware) techniques. Each tile bears the distinct Azupal castle hallmark on the reverse.
- Free-Hand Artistry: Unlike modern screen-printed replicas, these are hand-painted. You can see the variation in brushstroke weight and pigment density, meaning no two tiles are identical.
- The Glaze: Finished with a traditional tin-oxide glaze, which provides a high-gloss, durable surface that protects the pigments and gives the tiles their characteristic luminous depth.
3. Uses & Versatility
- Bespoke Wall Art: The set is perfectly sized to be framed together as a 2 x 2 panel, creating a striking focal point for a hallway, kitchen, or garden room.
- High-End Tableware: Use them as substantial, heat-resistant trivets for tea service or as unique individual coasters for a curated tablescape.
- Architectural Accents: For those with a DIY spirit, these can be set into a plaster wall or a backsplash to provide a "heritage" feel to a modern kitchen or bathroom.
- Collector’s Display: Because they are signed and hallmarked, they are excellent standalone pieces for a mantelpiece or bookshelf, displayed on small plate easels.
4. Care Instructions
To preserve the hand-painted glazes for the next generation, we recommend:
- Cleaning: Dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. If needed, use a slightly damp cloth with water only.
- Avoid Chemicals: Do not use abrasive pads, bleach, or acidic cleaners, as these can dull the glaze over time.
- Mounting: If using as trivets, ensure the back padding is level to prevent uneven pressure on the ceramic body.
