A beautifully preserved example of mid-century Alpine wood carving, this trinket box originates from the historic mountain town of Partenkirchen, Germany. The lid is meticulously hand-carved in high relief, featuring a lush arrangement of the "Alpine Trio"—the rare Edelweiss, the bell-shaped Gentian, and the Alpenrose.

It is a tactile, storied object, perfect for holding small treasures or stationery.

Dimensions

- Length: 17.1 cm
- Width: 9.9 cm
- Height: 5.3 cm

Condition

- Very Good - This vintage hand-carved box is in excellent structural and aesthetic condition, especially given its mid-century heritage. It presents as a well-preserved piece with an authentic, aged character that enhances its narrative appeal.

Woodwork & Carvings: The high-relief floral carvings on the lid remain crisp and remarkably intact. There are no significant chips, losses, or blunting to the delicate petals of the Edelweiss or Gentian motifs. The stippled background remains uniform and clear.

Surface & Patina: The lindenwood retains a rich, even honey-toned glow. There is minor, age-appropriate surface wear on the base and corners, consistent with light domestic use. This natural patina is desirable, as it confirms the object's age and history.

Structural Integrity: The box is "true" and sits flat on level surfaces without wobbling. There are no visible cracks, splits, or signs of historic woodworm in the timber.

Hardware & Function: The original brass hinges are securely seated and fully functional. The lid opens smoothly and closes with a satisfying, flush alignment against the fluted body.

Interior: The interior is clean and unfinished, showing the raw grain of the wood. There is some minor darkening to the floor of the box, which is a typical result of decades of contact with various trinkets.

Additional Information

1. Design & Features
The box is a masterclass in high-relief carving, a technique where the design sits significantly above the background plane to create a three-dimensional effect.
- The Alpine Trio: The lid features a central Edelweiss star, flanked by bell-shaped Gentians and delicate Alpenroses. Each petal is individually contoured, showcasing a soft, organic fluidity.
- Architectural Profile: In contrast to the intricate lid, the body of the box features a fluted vertical pattern. This rhythmic, geometric carving provides a grounding, architectural weight to the piece.
- The Ribbon Motif: A hand-carved flowing banner serves as the focal point, bearing the "Partenkirchen" inscription in a traditional serif font.

2. Craftsmanship
- Hand-wrought from solid lindenwood, this piece reflects the storied woodworking traditions of the Bavarian Highlands.
- Stippled Grounding: The background of the floral relief is meticulously "punched" or stippled. This artisan technique creates a matte, textured surface that allows the smooth, polished flowers to catch the light.
- Natural Patina: The wood has transitioned over decades into a rich honey-gold hue. This lustre is not a factory finish but the result of the natural oils in the timber oxidising over time, a hallmark of genuine vintage woodcraft.
- Joinery: The box utilises traditional brass hinges, recessed into the wood for a flush, seamless closure.

3. Uses & Versatility
While originally intended as a traveller's keepsake, its dimensions make it a versatile addition to a modern interior:
- Desk Companion: An elegant vessel for fountain pens, wax seals, or stationery essentials.
- Nightstand Sanctuary: A safe, tactile place to store daily jewellery or a wristwatch.
- Coffee Table Object: Used as a conversation piece to add texture and a sense of history to a curated stack of books.
- Vanity Storage: Ideal for housing small apothecary bottles or specialised grooming tools.

4. Care Instructions
To preserve the integrity of the wood and the detail of the carvings, follow these traditional care steps:
- Dusting: Use a soft, dry natural-bristle brush (like a clean make-up or pastry brush) to gently remove dust from the deep recesses of the floral carvings.
- Moisture Protection: Avoid using water or liquid cleaners. Wood is porous; moisture can cause the lindenwood to swell or cloud the patina.
- Conditioning: Once or twice a year, apply a very thin layer of high-quality clear beeswax polish. Buff gently with a lint-free cloth to maintain the wood’s glow and protect it from drying out.
- Placement: Keep away from direct heat sources or prolonged sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or fading.
