A remarkable survival from the mid-century era, this small decorative grape cluster is a masterclass in lapidary craft. Hand-carved in Mexico (Puebla Region) circa 1970, the piece showcases the natural, ethereal banding of genuine onyx.
While many vintage clusters feature metal leaves, this particular specimen belongs to a more refined category, featuring a hand-incised leaf also carved from solid onyx.

Condition
Condition
- Excellent - The onyx grape cluster is in overall excellent Vintage Condition
Stone Integrity: Each of the onyx spheres is securely attached and retains its original high-gloss polish. There are no significant fractures or "bruising" often seen in poorly handled stone fruit.
The Carved Leaf: The hand-incised onyx leaf is remarkably well-preserved. The serrated edges and delicate tip are intact, with no notable chips or losses to the stone’s profile.
Structural Vine: The wire core is firm and holds its shape well. The binding remains tight, ensuring the cluster feels substantial and balanced when handled.
Surface Patina: The piece exhibits a gentle, authentic patina consistent with its age. Any natural internal fissures or variations in colour are characteristic of genuine banded onyx and are not considered flaws, but rather evidence of its organic origin.

Additional Information
1. Design & Features
- Organic Silhouette: A heavy, weighted cluster designed to mimic the natural drape of a bunch of grapes.
- Mineral Palette: A sophisticated spectrum of olive, mint, and honey-toned onyx, featuring natural "clouding" and crystalline banding.
- The Rare Leaf: Unlike the common stamped-metal versions, this piece features a hand-sculpted onyx leaf with delicate, incised veining, making it a cohesive "all-stone" sculpture.
- Flexible Vine: The individual grapes are secured by a central wire core, allowing for slight adjustments to the cluster’s shape to suit your display.
2. Craftsmanship
- Each sphere has been individually turned and polished to a glass-like finish, a testament to the lapidary traditions of Puebla, Mexico.
- The artisan has carefully selected the stone to ensure a varied yet harmonious colour story across the cluster.
- The hand-incised leaf requires significant precision, as onyx is a delicate material that demands a steady hand to prevent fracturing during the carving of the serrated edges.
3. Uses & Versatility
- The Collector’s Vignette: A staple of Hollywood Regency and Mid-Century décor, these grapes provide a vertical element and natural texture to a stack of art books or a mantlepiece.
- Dining Centrepiece: Positioned on a sideboard or within a vintage fruit bowl, the translucency of the stone provides a permanent, elegant alternative to fresh fruit.
- Paperweight: Due to the density of the onyx, the cluster serves as a functional yet beautiful weight for a home office or study.
4. Care Instructions
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. If a deeper clean is required, use a damp cloth with a mild, pH-neutral soap. Avoid acidic cleaners (such as lemon or vinegar), as they will etch and dull the surface of the natural stone.
- Handling: Always support the cluster from the base rather than lifting it by the wire "stem" or the leaf, as the weight of the onyx can put stress on the wire connections over time.
- Placement: While sturdy, onyx is a soft stone that can chip if dropped on hard surfaces. Place on a stable, flat surface away from the very edge of high-traffic furniture.
