Condition
Condition
- Very Good - A beautiful, matched pair that presents wonderfully for display or light, careful use. The distinctive matte stoneware body maintains its velvety texture and excellent structural integrity.
Colour & Finish: The iconic sage green dip finish is clean and consistent across both pieces, free from the common water staining or heavy surface marking often found on vintage utility items.
Bas-Relief Sprigging: The intricate white classical overlays are in outstanding condition. The sprigged elements remain crisp, bright, and firmly adhered to the stoneware body, with no major losses, hairline lifting, or missing details to the figures or the acanthus leaf borders.
Notable Wear: Under close inspection, there are three, shallow flea bites/smooth chips located right on the dome of the three-hole shaker, immediately adjacent to the piercings. It does not detract from the overall display value.
Undersides & Stoppers: The bases show expected, minor shelf wear consistent with age. Both shakers retain their original, vintage "Suba-Seal" rubber stoppers. Reflecting their authentic vintage status, the rubber has naturally discoloured and hardened over time, but they remain intact and functional.

Additional Information
1. Design & Features
- Classical Motif: The shakers feature intricate white bas-relief sprigged overlays depicting classical cherubs (putti) captured in expressive, timeless poses.
- Architectural Framing: Each cherub scene is elegantly framed by detailed vertical acanthus leaf columns, adding a sense of structure and balance to the curved form.
- Functional Distinction: Designed for seamless tabletop use, the set is correctly paired with a six-hole pattern for one shaker and a three-hole pattern for the other.
- Authentic Hardware: The bases are fitted with their original, period-correct British "Suba-Seal" rubber stoppers.
2. Craftsmanship:
- The Famous Jasper Body: Crafted from Wedgwood’s iconic unglazed stoneware, these pieces feature the traditional "sage green dip" method, where the white clay body is delicately dipped in a coloured slip before decoration.
- Applied Sprigging: The crisp white classical reliefs were individually moulded and applied by hand ("sprigged") by skilled artisans prior to firing, a meticulous process requiring immense precision to ensure the fine details remain perfectly sharp.
- Historical Markings: The base bears the deeply impressed "WEDGWOOD ENGLAND" stamp, showcasing the crisp typography and production integrity characteristic of late 19th to mid-20th-century English manufacturing.
3. Uses & Versatility
- An Elegant Tablescape Accent: A beautiful addition to a slow-lived dinner table, adding texture, history, and a soft pop of heritage green to traditional linens or modern table settings.
- Thoughtful Gifting: An ideal collector's piece or a thoughtful housewarming gift for lovers of English heritage ceramics and classic design.
- Curated Vignettes: Beyond the table, this pair makes a striking addition to a kitchen dresser, open shelving, or a dedicated cabinet display alongside other heritage ceramics.
4. Care Instructions
- Gentle Hand Washing: Wash only by hand using warm water and a mild, eco-friendly liquid soap. Avoid abrasive sponges that could scratch the matte stoneware surface.
- Preserving the Reliefs: Use a soft-bristled brush (like a soft toothbrush) to gently dislodge dust or residue from the fine crevices of the white bas-relief work.
- Drying & Storage: Allow the pieces to air-dry completely before replacing the stoppers to prevent any internal moisture buildup. Store them out of direct, intense sunlight to keep the sage green dip looking pristine.
- Stopper Care: To protect the vintage rubber stoppers from further hardening, remove them gently when cleaning and avoid exposing them to hot water or direct sunlight. Allow the interiors to dry completely before refilling.
