Inspired by the traditional French pastry moulds, the Canelé Tiles by Wiid Design are a playful yet sophisticated exploration of form. Each tile features a striking high-relief design that balances soft, organic curves with sharp vertical lines.
Finished in a reactive green glaze, these earthenware tiles have a deep, mossy character with a wonderful "break" over the ridges, where the glaze thins to reveal warmer, earthier undertones.

Additional Information
Additional Information
1. Design & Features
- A contemporary ceramic tribute to the iconic Canelé de Bordeaux pastry mould.
- The deep fluting creates a strong 7.5 cm "pop" from the wall, adding significant texture to your decor.
- A high-gloss reactive green over an earthenware body. The glaze reacts to the heat of the kiln to create a variegated, multi-tonal finish.
2. Craftsmanship
- Hand-cast in Cape Town, these tiles represent the studio’s commitment to artisanal production.
- The high-gloss finish is achieved through a meticulous glazing process where the kiln's heat determines the final flow and break of the colour.
3. About Wiid Design
- Founded by Laurie Wiid van Heerden, the studio is celebrated for bridging the gap between fine art and functional design. Based in Observatory, Cape Town, Wiid Design focuses on high-end materials and labour-intensive handcraft.
4. Uses & Versatility
- Wall Art: Each tile features a recessed hole on the reverse, allowing it to be hung securely. They look particularly effective when mounted in a vertical or horizontal row, or as a singular focal point in a smaller space like a dressing room or hallway.
- Tabletop Sculpture: While they are ready to hang, these tiles also sit beautifully flat. They can be used as architectural anchors on a shelf or as tactile objects on a coffee table.
- Curated Groupings: The interaction between the Round and Oval silhouettes creates a wonderful rhythm when displayed together.
